Marskgården Højergård

Højer is located on a hilltop island at the edge of the marsh behind the outer dikes. From here you can look out into the damp low-lying marsh to the south and west. The town originated in the Middle Ages and was an early harbour for merchant ships and oyster boats. Højer is rich in architectural heritage and the town centre has one of the highest concentrations of listed and preservation-worthy buildings in the country.

Marskgården in Højer In the centre of Højer is a newly restored classic marsh farm in the West Schleswig style, built as a longhouse. The building used to be part of a larger farm complex and was at one time a four-winged farmhouse. Today, Højergård consists of the farmhouse from 1823, an older barn from the 18th century, a villa from 1906 and a new wing from 2019.

Experience the natural phenomenon of the black sun, the Tønder Marsh and the Wadden Sea National Park from its most generous side!

Tøndermarsken is Denmark's largest marshland area. The marsh is a distinctive landscape created by the sea and shaped by man. In the towns and landscape of Tøndermarsken you can experience a rich architectural culture surrounded by magnificent nature, where huge flocks of birds gather in spring and autumn.

Our experienced nature guides will take you out to the reedbeds at nightfall, where you will see the starlings gather in flocks of hundreds of thousands and dance in the sky before settling into the reeds. Experiencing and understanding the phenomenon of the black sun is an experience you will never forget!
