NØRRE SØDAM

As you approach Nørre Sødam, you'll encounter a landscape filled with peace, presence, and the rhythm of nature. The farms stand on werfen – man-made mounds that have risen like small islands in the flat, open marshland for centuries. Many werfen date back to the 13th century, a tradition brought here by the Frisians in the 12th century.

In days gone by, the earthworks protected people and animals from storm surges, and one could sail from farm to farm, even when the marsh was under water. Today, they are no longer necessary, but they give the landscape its very special character – a place where history and nature merge.

Here you can almost hear the silence and feel the presence: kingfishers flash past the streams, eagles and hawks soar majestically over the expanses, and deer tread carefully through the tall grass. The detached farmsteads rise like small man-made islands, and one clearly senses how the marshland folk lived close to the forces of nature – with respect, consideration, and a life in balance.

The yards are more than historic sites. They are living stories, rich wildlife, and a peace that can be experienced with all the senses – right in the magnificent landscape of the Tønder Marshes.
